Bendito sea Dios

Blessed be God — A Free Verse Poem

The battered soul sat crouched on the concrete slab;
Tattered, over-sized vestments obscured his deformity.
A visage chiseled with sorrows stared down into nothingness.
Stubby fingers gripped a tin plate of meager coins.

From a car window,
a crinkled bill fluttered in the breeze.
Revealing a toothless grin,
the forgotten one struggled to his feet,
and like a wounded creature, hobbled to the vehicle.

Trembling hands grasped the fortuitous gift.
Contorted face, lifted to the heavens,
exclaimed with hoarse emotion:
Bendito sea Dios!

His eyes, glistening with the wetness of gratitude,
peered from beneath the long-matted hair.
He kissed the offering raising it skyward in disbelief.

The man limped across the street of social disparity,
towards the ramshackle houses of the barrio,
vanishing into the forlorn labyrinth.
Buoyancy in gait; levity in stride,
hope had been restored to the hopeless.

Travelers all in the cosmic corridor,
Hallowed voices echo, “Bendito sea Dios.”
